Anya couldn’t stop fidgeting for the rest of the day. All she could think about was Cynthia. Was she scared, alone, cold? She wished she could let her know help would be coming. But help wouldn’t be coming. What could she and Jason really do if they couldn’t leave the mainland?

She held up her hand again in hope, but her comms flashed with the same connection error she’d been getting all day.

Anya sighed and dropped her hand to her stomach. Jason was lying on his cot listening to music, head bobbing in time to a beat she couldn’t hear. If she hadn’t known better, from his relaxed stance, she might have said he didn’t care. Grace and Evan were keeping Cynthia’s parents company. She lay back on her own cot, which was little more than a stretched piece of tarp.

All she could hope for was that they might learn something beyond what the news report had said.

She kept glancing over at Jason, who annoyingly had his eyes closed. Maybe his offer of help had been a ruse to steer Anya away from making trouble. Maybe he had no intention of doing anything, and was getting a kick out of watching her suffer like this. She sat up, hoping to get his attention, but he didn’t bite.

It was still early evening and, except for the younger children, most were up. She got up and wandered over to her classmates, the ones who knew Cynthia.

‘Hey,’ she said to Denise, who had always said hello to her friend.

The girl with dark-brown hair looked up. ‘Hey.’

‘This is crazy, right?’

‘Yeah, I can’t believe it—’

Before she could finish, Jessica flicked her dark-blonde hair back, trying to look nonplussed. ‘I know, I’ve been going crazy all day not being online.’

Anger twisted Anya’s gut. ‘I was talking to Denise. And I mean with the Synths. Cynthia is on the island. Who knows what might be happening to her.’

Denise smiled weakly. ‘I’m sure it will be over soon.’

‘But don’t you think it’s unfair? I mean the Synths have worked hard to be treated as equals. Then this happens.’

Denise went to answer, but Jessica gave her a disapproving look.

Denise said, ‘There’s a reason why the Synths are there right now. One killed a human, Anya. K.I.L.L.E.D. Just in case you don’t know what that means.’

Anya stared at the girl. She cared more about being liked by Jessica than standing up for what was right.

Instead of being sensible and walking away she tried to make her see reason. ‘It’s not as simple as that... we don’t know why that happened.’

Jessica huffed, as if Anya were an irritation. ‘And to think I used to partner with her.’

She shuddered and turned to her friends, who pity-laughed at her pathetic joke. Even Denise.

‘You’re all assholes,’ Anya blurted out. Jessica’s eyes widened. ‘Yeah, I said it. Cynthia is worth ten times all of you put together.’

She stormed off, hearing more laughter behind her. She balled her fists. One thing she couldn’t tolerate was double standards.
